PRE-REQ: Breast Massage and Breast Care

Class size is limited to 10 students, so material can be customized to students' needs in a safe and intimate setting.

This class is relevant to all students looking to expand their breast massage repertoire, as it will focus on anatomy, physiology and pathology beyond the patient population of lactating parents. We will become more comfortable and familiar with chest and breast tissue, including the areola and nipple.

Nurturing parents as they successfully feed their babies is a highly rewarding practice that supports families in our communities at a profound level. Breast massage and manual expression of breast milk is highly effective in increasing milk production, as evidenced by the many cultures throughout the world that include this work as standard of care on maternity wards. The simplicity of the work allows bodyworkers to easily and confidently incorporate breast massage into their current practices, while adding an appealing and beneficial service to increase clientele.

Unfortunately, mammary glands have sometimes suffered injury, illness or surgery and need additional tools to release and support wellness. In addition to self-care for lactating mothers, we will also learn how to palpate mammary glands and techniques to release fascial restriction and scar tissue within the breast. We will also learn to delineate between fascial, glandular and energetic tension in the chest and breast tissue.

If you haven't watched them yet, please review the 3-part inroduction to breast self-care on my BoobTube channel.

I highly recommend the lactation videos by Global Health Media as well. These are excellent to share with any new lactating mother.

Prerequisite: Introduction to Breast Massage and Breast Care. This class will cover 8 of the necessary contact hours needed for Washington State's latest requirements to perform breast massage according to the 2017 regulations.

The training is open to students of all genders, but class size will be limited to 10 to support the intimacy of the work.

Oncology massage will not be covered, but information related to breast changes after surgery will be. This class does not replace training or certification in oncology massage.

Basics of pregnancy massage will not be covered and this class does not replace training or certification in pregnancy massage.
